What do our interns learn? How do they evaluate their internship experience? Here are a few comments… Ryan Tan, Boston University, '11What professional skills did you learn during this internship that you feel will help you further in college and in your career? As far as professional skills go, I learned the proper format for sending pitches and article ideas to publications, which is important if I ever want to do that for myself in the future. I also became familiar with the traditional PR channels such as ProfNet and other websites, as well as the paid press-release sites. I also had to use outside-of-the-box strategies to locate editor’s emails and to find good target publications for our clients, which opened my eyes to the different ways to navigate search engines. What career insights did you gain that you feel will help you be successful in your eventual career? I learned the importance of being self-motivated and promoting my own ideas. Too often we expect opportunities to fall into or laps, but I realized the importance of getting out into the business community, spreading your ideas, and promoting your own value. I think this empowered position will help me find the motivation and initiative to go after the things I want in the future. I also really recognized the importance of keeping in contact with people that can benefit your business in the future. What did you NOT learn about that you wish you had? I really got more out of this internship that I even expected, as Ken did a good job covering all the bases that he said he would in the beginning. What aspects of the internship did you enjoy? I enjoyed looking over book proposals and helping other people organize their ideas, like when we met with Greg Michaud to help him compose an AIL. I really think the creative process is interesting, and I love when I can see someone’s thoughts finally come together and realize what it is they want to say. As mad as that one book proposal got me, it showed me what I get truly passionate about – ideas and the composition of them. How could this internship be improved? No real comments, I think it was a great experience. How could the room you worked in be made over to improve its working environment? Round table! And a window!
