Internship Evaluations

What do our interns learn?

How do they evaluate their internship experience?

Here are a few comments…

Maggie Sutherland, Washington & Lee University '10

What professional skills did you learn during this internship that you feel will help you further in college and in your career?

The most significant skill that I have learned at emerson consulting is the importance of self-motivation. Clients can be experts in their fields, yet without motivation, they will never be “thoughtleaders.” However, by exiting their comfort zones (by doing things like writing an article or a book), they can gain success as well as establish themselves as a go-to expert in their fields. This is a professional skill that I will definitely extend throughout my college career and future work career.

What career insights did you gain that you feel will help you be successful in your eventual career?

It has been so beneficial to work in a company that touches in the publishing, marketing, and public relations industries. After working here, I would feel comfortable entering any of these industries with a firm foundation.

What aspects of the internship did you enjoy?

I really liked that there is an established internship program and emerson consulting. Since Ken has run this internship program in the past, he now has an acutely constructed a program that is efficient and beneficial for both him and us. As an intern, I have had a lot of responsibilities and this hands-on experience has taught me a lot about publishing, marketing, and PR. And of course the local field trips, lunches, and business meetings in Boston.

What did you NOT learn about that you wish you had?

Sadly, on the museum quiz I did not know who visited Ralph Waldo Emerson from a long distance on a snowy night. By missing that question, I allowed my office mate Michaela to pull ahead and win the Museum Quiz Championship with her correct response to the original Indian name for Concord: Musquetaquid, even though she spelled it Meskwamaquid. But now I know.

How could this internship be improved?

It was great! No complaints!

How could the “freezer” (the room you worked in) be made over to improve its working environment?

Some might complain about the microwave. however- although the microwave may not appear to work at first attempt, all you have to do is slam the metal siding with your fist on the left hand side while it is on and it works like a charm. My other office mate Julie likes to stand in front of it and warm herself when the temperature drops too low.
