For his fifth book, Lewis Green, Chief Communications Officer & Founder of L&G Business Solutions, a marketing and communications firm, chose a subject focus not normally associated with a business book: happiness!

Called Lead With Your Heart: Sell Happiness and You and Your Business Will Flourish (HRD Press, 2007), Lew’s book calls upon companies to adopt a business model that includes the goal of creating a better world in which to do business, and to work and to live.

“My book is about changing the way we do business,” Lew explains. “It’s written to inspire business executives, managers and entrepreneurs to invest in an approach that will not just succeed in the traditional business sense but contribute as well to changing the world in which we live.”

Lew credits his inspiration for the book to Mahatma Gandhi who once declared, “ We must be the change we wish to see in the world.” Other strong influences included his own personal experiences during three decades as an executive and entrepreneur, including management positions at GTE Discovery Publications, Puget Sound Energy and Starbucks and time spent as a publisher, editor, freelance writer and marketing/communications guru. Throughout his career, he constantly marveled at how most businesses completely ignored humanistic values while those who responded to them tended to be healthier in all ways, when all was said and done.

Thus Lead With Your Heart is about creating value-driven businesses that foster environments in which the well-being of their customers and employees (i.e., their people) rates higher in priority than an overzealousness to earn money, money, money. Lew’s book goes so far as to discuss how a business can literally create happiness. By doing so, it argues, we can change the world in good and right ways at the same time we are reaping large profits.

Lewis GreenReflecting on the motivation that caused him to write this book, Lew explains, “I have often wondered why American businesses don’t spend more time strategizing around happiness. Happiness after all is the driving force behind everything we Americans do. It’s the key to determining our wants, needs and desires, the essence of the American Dream.

“While it’s certainly true that many companies operate in a customer-focused manner and invest lots of energy in meeting those customers’ needs, responding to those needs should logically result in happy customers, and happy employees, and a healthy bottom line. Yet, unfortunately, efforts made by too many businesses fall far short of that. If a business truly commits to lead with its heart, however, genuinely happy and loyal customers can be the result.”
