Why Dogs Wag Their Tails:
Lessons Leaders Can Learn
About Work, Joy, and Life
By Sherri McArdle and Jim Ramerman
WBiz Books, 2007
According to a recent Gallup poll, 70% of working professionals report feeling “actively disengaged” on the job. This translates into widespread senses of low self-worth and lack of meaningful accomplishment, and virtually no on-the-job contentment, happiness or joy. Though various solutions for solving this crisis have been introduced from management consultants and motivation experts over the years, until now none have drawn practical suggestions from an unexpected source near and dear to many workers’ hearts and homes: their dog!
Co-authored by leadership experts Sherri McArdle and Jim Ramerman, Why Dogs Wag Their Tails: Lessons Leaders Can Learn About Work, Joy, and Life (WBiz Books 2007) serves up real-life tales of professionals solving their work and leadership problems by tackling them from their pooch’s point of view. The result is a unique, enlightening business book for leaders at all levels who have been searching in frustration for years to substantially increase both their professional effectiveness and their personal fulfillment in all aspects of work and life.
“Finding happiness is a natural talent for dogs,” explains Sherri, “though it’s not always so easy for the rest of us. For many people, joyful things rarely happen as effortlessly as they typically do for a dog.” With this in mind, Sherri and Jim gathered together stories of canine behavior that readers could relate to as they searched for answers of their own.
Both authors of Why Dogs Wag Their Tails are dog owners themselves, in addition to many years spent as leadership specialists who appreciate the link between people and dogs. Their book includes more than 20 narratives that revolve around central human work-life themes, such as finding clarity, earning credibility and achieving goals, to name just a few. Their stories poignantly bridge dog behavior (and thinking) with common business dilemmas, each chapter concluding with a section called “High Gain Insights,” i.e., recommendations for readers inspired by lessons gleaned from humankind’s best friend.
“Our book helps business leaders solve problems and identify ways to thrive in a variety of situations,” explains Jim. “It explores the importance of cultivating leadership qualities such as openness, celebration and responsiveness. Its main difference is that it takes its cues from a decidedly non-business world… the happy world of dogs!”
