Georg Christoph Litchtenberg once said, “One’s first step in wisdom is to question everything… one’s last is to come to terms with everything.”
Beyond Reason: Questioning Assumptions of Everyday Life, written by our CIO (Chief Imaginative Officer) of emerson consulting group, Ken Lizotte CMC, begins with this quote by Litchtenberg, and is the foundation of this, his 4 th book.
Beyond Reason aims to show how “counter-wisdom” can not only make things turn out for the best, but will often be fully supported by scientific evidence! Ken’s book cites studies, surveys and investigations of common assumptions, proving that going above and beyond one’s powers of reason may offer the surest path to wished-for results, common sense, and peace of mind.
“Life is all a matter of how you look at it,” Ken explains. “Frequently, we assume something is true because it’s repeated again and again. Amazingly, when you go to look for evidence of these truisms, they can’t be found!”
Ken’s book is built around such topics as “When ‘Wisdom’ Doesn’t Add Up,” “On the Job,” “The Purely Personal,” “Assumptions About Women,” “Balancing Work and Family” and “Life Itself.” Ken assures all his readers that after reading his book “your assumptions about life will never be the same.”
Related to the “On the Job” section, for example, Ken challenges his readers with this question: “Afraid to Share? If So, You Could Be Sabotaging Many Realms.” In this chapter, the conventional business trend of sharing thoughts, ideas and information on only a “need-to-know” basis is questioned. Instead, the idea of MORE corporate communication is touted.
Drawing from the thoughts of other thoughtleaders, such as Ram Charan, the idea of sharing EVERYTHING---the good, the bad, and the ugly---is advocated. The chapter closes by saying, “Sometimes life takes us down a hard road where it’s time for one brave soul to stand up and break the accepted counterproductive pattern. Might YOU be the designated courageous one (DCO) today?”
As CIO of emersongroup, Ken not only offers his client thoughtleaders ideas and knowledge about publishing, speaking and other thoughtleading channels, he guides them through the rigors of leveraging all these activities and channels, insuring they are tied to each thoughtleader’s bottom line. Past president of IMCNE (the New England chapter of the Institute of Management Consultants) from 2000 to 2005, he is currently on IMC’s National Board of Directors and claims IMC’s special CMC designation (certified management consultant). He has published three previous books and hundreds of articles, leads career seminars at Harvard University, contributes articles and columns to the American Management Association and speaks frequently at conferences sponsored by professional groups. His topics include: publishing articles/books for a competitive edge, unlocking creativity, balancing work and family and becoming a thoughtleader.
Ken’s firm emerson consulting group has as its mission “to transform consultants and consulting firms, attorneys and law firms, professional service providers and their firms, executives and their companies, and other types of experts into thoughtleaders by helping them distinguish themselves from their competition.” Doing so, Ken maintains, will boost already profitable relationships with existing clients as well as attract qualified and eager new ones.
