THOUGHTLEADER PROFILE

Michael Oleksak

Michael OleksakIn this competitive world, consultants need to differentiate themselves from the pack. Michael Oleksak CMC and Trek Consulting LLC have a unique approach: working with CEOs of owner-managed business to face today’s challenges with an eye to building tomorrow’s value.

An “owner-managed business” serves a dual role: the owner’s “job” as well as his/her retirement fund. As a coach and an advisor, Mike helps this unique segment of the business world produce results it needs in both the short and long term. A few examples:

  • By understanding and evaluating a company’s strengths and weaknesses, Mike enables it to make short term improvements day by day and week by week. Marketing, sales, operations, finance and strategy are common areas to which Mike lends his coaching and consulting strengths.
  • In the long term, Mike helps companies build realizable value. Mike and his partner Mary Adams CMC are experts on factors that influence corporate value in today’s knowledge era. Together, they are co-authors of Intangible Capital: Putting Knowledge to Work in the 21 st Century Organization, to be published by Praeger in early 2010.
  • Mike also helps business owners understand options for their eventual exit from their businesses, whether this translates into internal transfer (management buyouts, ESOPs or gifting to the family’s next generation) or an external transfer (selling the business to a strategic or financial buyer).

Mike’s involvement with his clients delivers significant results. A service company for example was able to triple its size and a consulting company nearly doubled its rates on core offerings. One information firm that Mike worked with won new financing commitments and a software company successfully completed a merger. Another firm re-engineered its core business processes as a result of Mike’s coaching.

Prior to co-founding Trek Consulting, Mike spent over two decades as a successful commercial lender for Bank of Boston and as a revenue producer and manager with Thomson Financial. Trek’s clients benefit from that experience when confronted with vexing issues of finance, sales and marketing, business value, exit planning, strategic thinking and strategy implementation. He is also a founding member of the Exit Planning Exchange (www.exitplanningexchange.com) with chapters in Boston and Hartford, as well the author of numerous published articles in such respected business publications as The Handbook of Business Strategy, Executive Excellence, Mergers & Acquisitions, Family Business, Management Consulting News, Executive Insights, The Independent Consultant, CEO Refresher, Mass High Tech, M & A Today and Indus Business Journal. He also writes a column on strategic action in his firm’s monthly newsletter Trekking.

An energetic and dynamic public speaker, Mike has taught business seminars at Northeastern University and is a Certified Management Consultant (CMC®), a designation awarded by IMC USA. Less that 1% of consultants in the US have achieved this honor. Early in their careers, Mike and Mary also co-authored the book Beisbol: Latin Americans and the Grand Old Game (1996, McGraw-Hill).
