THOUGHTLEADER PROFILE

Amy Muller, Strategos

NOTE: This profile is one of a continuing series of profiles of our client thoughtleaders

Amy Muller, StrategosHow do you turn a great idea into a great business? Just ask Amy Muller.

As a Director at the strategic management firm, Strategos, Amy helps companies funnel their innovation and technology into smart, workable business models. “These days innovation is more and more ‘the business,’” Amy explains, “so clients are looking to embed innovation as part of ‘corporate life and culture’ and are less likely to have isolated innovation projects and groups.”

While finding the perfect mix of business and creativity may be daunting to some, Amy approaches each project with real world knowledge and some tried-and-true techniques. “We teach innovation by doing it,” she says “ which works much better than ‘innovation training’ in a classroom. To be truly innovative, you have to do it… not talk about it!” Amy thus encourages her clients to reframe their thinking and tackle new perspectives, and is quick to remind them: “To get to new answers, you have to ask new questions.”

Amy is no stranger to innovation herself, with a PhD in chemistry from the University of Minnesota and a BA from Dartmouth. Prior to working in strategic planning, Amy was a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Bell Labs. She has also published over 74 articles in the fields of semiconductor processing, optical materials, materials science, and analytical chemistry. She writes and publishes business articles too in publications read by managers at companies similar to those Strategos serves. Such publications where her articles have recently appeared include CEO Refresher, CIO.com, Employment Relations Today and Indus Business Journal.

Amy’s science background has been particularly helpful as her focus has turned to innovation. She’s quick to point out that innovation, like science, is “all about hypothesis formation and testing,” crediting her science background for her ability to see “nearly everything through a very logical lens and always [look] for the cause-effect relationships at work.” That, and “a healthy respect for good data.”

A founder of MentorNet, an online mentoring program for women in the fields of science and engineering, Amy has also served as Director of Corporate Strategy at AT&T where she founded AT&T’s Opportunity Discovery Department.

With her unique background, Amy brings a similarly unique perspective to strategic management to Strategos where she specializes in technology, consumer goods and healthcare, working with a variety of companies to help them profit from their innovations and use their good ideas to create products that meet their customers’ needs. With the right guidance, she knows, companies can enhance their reputation and profits, and define themselves as boundary pushers.

“Some of the more rewarding projects, for me personally, are those where I’ve had the opportunity to spend time in an unfamiliar industry and soak up the learning,” she says. “I really enjoy working across a variety of industries and being able to share some lessons and examples of approaches to problems across these industries.  I can get really interested in just about any kind of business or product:  from armored vehicles to baseball trading cards!”

Amy’s expertise helps companies get radical with their thinking, challenging them to have a flexible viewpoint but at the same time search for ways to make a profit while lowering their risk. Her broad knowledge and experience in various fields make her a dynamic thinker and a recognized thoughtleader among innovators everywhere.
