THOUGHTLEADER PROFILE

Dave Ramsden, Atrion

Dave Ramsden, AtrionAs the first-ever Chief Intelligence Officer (CIO) at Atrion Networking Corporation, Dave Ramsden is a busy man. Leading Atrion's Information Services team, Dave focuses on converting information into intelligence, and then collaborating with other executives to transform that intelligence into corporate strategy.

From the very beginning of his Atrion career, Dave’s dedicated himself to seeking out the best possible systems and procedures to serve Atrion’s customers while simultaneously leading the charge for positive change in almost every other aspect of Atrion’s business. In 2001 Dave joined Atrion as a Professional Services Manager and later as Operations Director. Promoted to Chief Intelligence Officer in April 2010, his focus then turned to analyzing business intelligence and using it to enhance Atrion’s information systems, processes and efficiency, all with a steady eye towards Atrion’s long-term business goals.

“It is pleasantly surprising to see the way people embraced the intelligence we produced,” he says. “It’s not often that someone in my position can come into a sales meeting with claims that he can double performance without being laughed out of the room. But when you can make a compelling case drawn from the very people sitting in the room and data from their own accounts, the possibility of seemingly ‘outrageous’ claims becomes more tangible.”

As Atrion’s first intelligence chief, Dave’s role is an ever-evolving one, offering him a grand opportunity to apply his knowledge on a number of new frontiers. His commitment to synthesizing gathered information has proven invaluable in an industry where being on the cutting-edge is vital yet often much harder than it sounds. But then, forward thinking has long been one of Dave’s strengths.

“I think the two best techniques for adapting to change are exploring the business goals behind the changes and then engaging teams and other leaders in collaboration,” he says. “Of course, we have a seasoned team that really does these things well and that helps achieving our goals immensely.”

Prior to working for Atrion, Dave served as Primer Operations Manager for Dimension Data US, where he supervised engineering and project management staff in eight offices. He’s also held positions at Data Comm Systems Inc. and Eastern Telecom. These years of hands-on experience are enhanced by his eclectic interests and a love of learning, exemplified by his BA in History and MA in English, both at Bridgewater State College, and a stint as a summer graduate student at venerable Oxford University in England. Dave even worked as a musician (guitar and mandolin) before beginning his career in business.

With his future-focused outlook, Dave is a true leader in his field, constantly looking for fresh ideas to further his long-term goals. In the past two years, he’s published articles with such titles as “IT and the Adolescent Organization,” and “Revitalizing IT’s Worth.” These articles have appeared in CIO Update, Network World, and CEO Refresher. Furthermore, his article “Rediscovering the Value of IT” stole the cover for Vital Magazine, as well as a featured profile. He is also at work on a book covering these and other related IT topics.

“Publishing adds yet another level of affirmation for me,” he explains. “It adds visibility and the opportunity for feedback, which is always valuable and interesting. The end result is a marked increase in both credibility and opportunity.”
