THOUGHTLEADER PROFILE

Joe GrayJoe Gray

With almost two decades of experience as a benefits broker, Joe Gray, thoughtleader and founding member of the Boston-based Longfellow Benefits, fully understands the consequences of increasing legislation and onerous regulation imposed on the industry—so his clients don’t have to.

“Legislation can put employers in a very difficult position,” says Gray. “Whether it be at the federal or state level, making sense of new legislation is at the core of our service—it has to be. Our clients are always looking to us for solutions, and so it is our job to be prepared.”

As Managing Partner with Longfellow Benefits, Gray says he has witnessed the business become more expensive, complex and competitive, noting that his role as a benefit broker has changed in accordance with these trends. In a recent article published in Employee Benefit Plan Review titled “Services to Expect from your Employee Benefits Broker,” Gray remarked:

“The delivery of employee benefits has changed profoundly over the last decade. Several years of double-digit medical cost inflation and spectacular corporate failures (i.e. Enron) have led to dramatic restructuring of benefit and retirement options. The pendulum has shifted…the complexity of the benefits landscape has increased to the point where clients demand and expect that their advisors have the intellectual property and service infrastructure to deliver appropriate solutions.”

Deliver indeed. As a Registered Employee Benefit Consultant (REBC), Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Registered Health Underwriter (RHU) and a Massachusetts Licensed Insurance Advisor (LIA), Gray has continually utilized his expertise to provide his clients with superior service. That same expertise has allowed Joe to make a seemingly effortless transition into becoming a thoughtleader. Regularly publishing articles, op-eds and essays in numerous publications, Joe has solidified his reputation as one of the most knowledge brokers in the trade and gained increased exposure for his ideas.

Gray holds a Massachusetts Life Accident & Health Producers License and FINRA Series 6, 63 and 7 registrations and is a past board member of the New England High Tech Charity Foundation, a member of the New England Employee Benefits Council, and serves on carrier advisory boards.
