THOUGHTLEADER PROFILE

Tim HebertTim Hebert

AOL Time Warner, Polaroid Corporation, Cisco Systems—Tim Hebert has helped some of the most successful corporations on the global marketplace solve their technical problems. With over two decades of experience, the CEO of Atrion Networking Corporation has become one of the leading experts in the field of strategic technological solutions and leading edge technologies. Benefiting his company, its clients and consumers, Hebert’s expertise has also served him well as a thoughtleader. Publishing articles for a variety of publications, speaking at conferences and panels, as well as conducting original research, Hebert’s insight is no longer reserved solely for his clients.

“Information technology is woven into the fabric of almost every business,” writes Hebert in his recent article “Costs can mount fast for system downtime” published in the Providence Business News. “When information systems are not functioning, business stops; both your staff and customers are left hanging and frustrated.”

Though Hebert understands the complexities of the industry down to the smallest of details, as a thoughtleader he is also very aware of the larger trends and patterns emerging within the field.

“The industry used to focus almost solely on tech smarts,” said Hebert. “Today it emphasizes the fusion between those same technological skills and business savvy. The industry requires people that understand technology, but who also understand the business needs as well. It’s been a major shift.”

And few understand this shift as well as Hebert, who prior to joining Atrion served on councils for such high-profile manufacturers as the aforementioned Cisco Systems, RSA Security, Silverback Technologies, Packeteer, Bluesocket and 1Nservice. Additionally, he advised companies like Codex Digital Communications and Charles River Data System and ran the test engineering and customer service organization for Avanti Communications, garnering the company’s ‘Pride in Avanti’ and ‘Unsung Hero’ awards—experience that has made thoughtleading seem almost second nature.

“Information technology has evolved from a set of tools that a business uses to be more efficient, to a system in which information technology and business are so intertwined that they cannot be separated,” he writes. “The flow of accurate and timely information is the lifeblood of the business, and when it’s disrupted, business screams to a dead halt. That gets expensive fast. Lost revenues can easily run up into the six or seven figures. And that’s just the start.”

While Atrion expands its business, it has also developed a reputation as a company with a vibrant, social conscious or what Hebert himself refers to as “social entrepreneurialship.” A strong advocate for building lasting relationships with the community, Hebert and like-minded colleagues have spearheaded many of the company’s charitable initiatives—creating a model other organizations are likely to follow.

“There’s a terrific sense today that business can change the world around itself for the better,” said Hebert. “And that’s a big perceptional change from several years ago.”
