THOUGHTLEADER PROFILE

Dan Cassidy

Dan Cassidy, Argus Consulting LtdIt takes a “grand slam” to make it into the pantheon of thoughtleading and Dan Cassidy FSA, President of Argus Consulting Ltd, has done it! This past month he signed a contract with John Wiley & Sons for a book to be called, The Manager’s Guide to Strategic Retirement Plan Management. With that new feather in his cap, Dan adds “book author” to three other thoughtleading endeavors: articles author (and columnist), public speaker and media source (i.e., reporters frequently interview him as an expert source for their articles).

Founder of Argus Consulting Ltd, a strategic consulting firm providing retirement plan consulting services to both for-profit and non-profit organizations in the US, UK and Canada, Dan’s client projects have included forecasts of pension valuation results for ERISA and FAS 87/88, retiree medical valuations, plan design for 401(k), 403(b) and pension plans, merger and acquisition analysis, investment performance monitoring, 401(k) plan audits, fiduciary review, assisting Canadian and UK firms with starting and monitoring US retirement plans, and FAS 123 stock option valuation. Formerly an executive officer at William H. Mercer, Inc. and a consultant at Towers Perrin in Boston, he is currently on the faculty at Boston College’s Center for Retirement Research as well as Bentley College’s Pension and Employee Benefits Administration program where he teaches a course on taxation. He also serves on the Society of Actuaries’ Education and Examination Committee’s Executive group, which is responsible for training educational and examination committee members of all pension actuaries in the US and Canada.

Where have his thoughtleading activities taken him? Dan is a featured columnist for Employee Benefits Plan Review, a frequent commentator on Wall Street Journal Radio and his articles have been published in such high profile financial, management, industry and human resources publications as: Employee Benefits News, The Handbook of Business Strategy, Pension & Investments, Benefits & Compensation Digest, Employment Relations Today, and many more. He recently spoke on the impact of SOX on pension plan management to NEEBC (the New England Employee Benefits Council) and has also spoken on retirement and pension plan issues at the Conference of Consulting Actuaries, at Society of Actuaries programs, both local and national, and other venues.

What has Dan found to be the primary benefit of thoughtleading?

“The experience for me has been fantastic,” he says. “The way I sell my services is that I typically get referred by someone. Whether a prospect is in London, Canada or the USA, I show up at their site… on my nickel. Then I talk about their issues, and when the time is right, I say: ‘By the way, here’s a summary of my firm plus a half dozen articles that we’ve gotten published in the past year.’ Credibility… instantaneously!

“Thoughtleading invariably makes a prospective client more comfortable with the initial choice of using my firm. I’m always battling competition and so publishing supports my business. By publishing on a regular basis, I can tell people that I can promise to keep sending them new articles while the big firms that are my competitors will only be sending them big bills!”
