THOUGHTLEADER PROFILE

Doug WolfDoug Wolf

Doug Wolf has often been told that one of his outstanding qualities is that he is way too honest… possibly to a fault. One example of this is a story that Doug’s wife Sherri loves to share. While in law school, the story goes, Doug purchased a set of chairs for his apartment. But when the order arrived, there was one chair too many. So, overly honest guy that Doug is, he picked up the extra chair and walked blocks and blocks and blocks to return it to the store. “When I got there they laughed,” he recalls now. “They said I should have kept it.”

As a shareholder at Wolf Greenfield, Boston’s leading intellectual property law firm, and Co-Chair of the firm’s Trademark Group and Chair of its Small Business Group, Doug preaches what he practices, i.e., insisting to his client companies that they should operate honestly. Specializing primarily in the fields of trademark prosecution and litigation, patent portfolio management, infringement and patentability analysis, licensing, and Internet issues, Doug also provides due-diligence and acquisition analysis to venture groups on target companies and technologies. And he is an expert on issues that cross national borders.

“With a proactive strategic trademark and domain name plan in place, you can remain a step ahead of would-be infringers, in the US and abroad,” he says. “Every country has different laws, and to the extent that the theories behind the laws overlap, they are applied differently. But in whichever country you may be trying to obtain a trademark registration, there are basic strategies you can use to keep your portfolio and trademarks, including domain names, strong.”

Doug is a published author whose articles have appeared in both business and legal journals including New England In-House Counsel, The Handbook of Business Strategy, Boston Business Journal and e-Commerce Law & Strategy. A member of the Massachusetts Bar, he is also actively involved in the MIT Enterprise Forum of Cambridge, an educational resource for entrepreneurs and start-up companies, serving as a member of its Executive Board and Chair of the MIT 10-250 Committee. In addition, he serves on the editorial board of American Lawyer Media’s Internet Law & Strategy and is a member of the International Trademark Association’s The Trademark Reporter Committee where he reviews original articles for publication in its bimonthly journal.
