THOUGHTLEADER PROFILE

Dave VogelDave Vogel

David A. Vogel’s relentlessly inventive mind has made him a top thoughtleader in the medical-device industry—and an emerging thoughtleader in boating and automotive safety.

Dave asks questions no one else asks.

Could hundreds of patients be injured if a terrorist hacked his way into a hospital’s network of medical devices and systemically sabotaged them? How can this be prevented? Is there a better way for boaters to sound fog warnings than pressing a button every two minutes? Is there a cheaper way to monitor auto tire pressure than current technology?

A Ph.D. in bioengineering, Dave is the founder and president of Intertech Engineering Associates in Norwell , Mass. — one of the first and most successful providers of outsourced engineering services for medical-device manufacturers. Both Fortune 500 companies and startups hire his firm to develop the software and electronics in advanced medical devices such as a new organ-transport device that lets the human heart live much longer outside the body.

Manufacturers also employ Intertech to insure that the software in their devices is bug-free, works in the field and won’t harm patients. Intertech has a 100% safety record with software validation.

Dave’s boating invention, FogMate, sounds foghorn warnings automatically. Another innovation, Nocturn, automatically keeps a boat’s light focused on a navigational marker

Dave also invented a new way to monitor tire pressure that ultimately could save automakers millions.

Despite his accomplishments, Dave didn’t have the recognition he deserves until he embarked on a thoughtleader program. Though Intertech’s work is on the cutting edge, only a small group in the industry knew of it. He had a myriad of ideas, but few outlets.

A little over a year into the program, he’s a published author whose articles appear in virtually all of the top medical-device magazines, including Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry, Biomedical Instrumentation & Technology, Designfax/Medical Equipment Designer and Medical Design News. He’s also been interviewed by and quoted in The New York Times, Mass High Tech and most of the medical-device magazines mentioned above. His FogMate has been featured prominently in leading boating magazines.

A sought-after speaker on technical, regulatory and management issues at medical-device conferences, Dave reports tangible results from thoughtleading:

“Recently, I was talking to a prospect who told me: ‘You’re all over the place. I see your articles all the time, and I went to your last seminar. That’s why I called you.’ That shows me that you have to stay in front of your target audience all the time. You can’t let them forget you. Thoughtleading does that—in a highly professional, informative way.”

Thanks to thoughtleading, Dave’s personal visibility and Intertech’s fortunes are both solidly on the upswing.
