thoughts you should know...
...surprise quiz!

1. From where do we get the phrase “rule of thumb” ?

2. What do bulletproof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers, and laser printers all have in common?

3. The name of the game of golf is actually an acronym. Do you know what GOLF stands for?

4. Fill in the blank: The only mobile US national monument is _____________.

5. Guess the average number of people airborne over the US at any given hour.

6. Name the only food that doesn't spoil.

7. From where do we get the phrase “wet your whistle"?

8. Which day of the year experiences more collect telephone calls than any other:

  • Mother’s Day?
  • Father’s Day?
  • Christmas?
  • Thanksgiving?
  • Easter?

9. From where do we get the phrase "Mind your Ps and Qs"?

10. True or False: It is impossible to lick your elbow (OK, go ahead and try!)

ANSWER KEY:

1. In England in the 1400s, a law was set forth that a man was only allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. Hence the proverbial "rule of thumb."

2. All were invented by women.

3. Many years ago in Scotland, the game of golf was invented under this proviso: "Gentlemen Only...Ladies Forbidden." Thus the word GOLF entered the English language.

4. The San Francisco cable cars

5. 61,000

6. Honey

7. In Merry Olde England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or handle, of their ceramic cups. Whenever they needed a refill, they used it to whistle to the barmaid. "Wet your whistle" was inspired by this practice.

8. Father's Day

9. In English pubs today, ale is ordered by pints and quarts as it has been for centuries. When customers in olden days got unruly, the bartender would yell at them to settle down and to "Mind your pints and quarts."

10. Quite true. OK, smart guy, try it again.

thoughts and actions...
...a day at the Rotary

At a Rotary Club luncheon in summer 2005, Ken Lizotte, our Chief Imaginative Officer (CIO), warned the business owners in attendance that “credibility is vital for gaining new customers. However, credibility through such means as publishing cannot be successful on its own, requiring proactive help from YOU!”

What kind of proactive help was our CIO talking about? Find out in this account of Ken’s Rotary diatribe that day: “Food’s Up and the Bell Has Rung” by emersongroup editor/scribe Stacy Kanter.
