thought leader university...
...speak like a CEO

You don't have to be a natural-born speaker to develop a compelling communication style all your own. Whether in the corner office or the Oval Office, at the dining room table or before an audience of millions, you CAN learn to speak like a leader and get results. You'll find a blueprint for achieving this in a new book by award-winning news anchor and top CEO communication coach Suzanne Bates, titled Speak Like a CEO: Secrets for Commanding Attention and Getting Results (McGraw-Hill, April 2005).

This breakthrough book is a sophisticated approach based on the notion that successful leaders develop unique communication styles. The book's self-assessments, exercises, and customizable self-improvement plans let readers zero in on their communicator strengths and discover previously unrecognized natural abilities.

To be notified when the book is officially ready, and for notice of special events featuring Suzanne, add your email to her e-list by contacting her at suzanne@bates-communications.com or by visiting www.bates-communications.com

thoughts and actions...
...It's the "idea," stupid!

For those of you who can remember back this far, during the first Clinton-for-President campaign, a sign was hung on the wall of the Clinton campaign HQ reminding one and all, "It's the economy, stupid!" This sign served to ground Clinton staffers who might otherwise forget that the success of the campaign relied on maintaining this voter theme.

When proposing articles for publication, the same dynamic reigns, this time in the phrase "It's the 'idea,' stupid!" Editors of publications are constantly searching out new ideas for articles, and typically could care less about you the author's credentials, company service mix, motivation for writing or even past publishing experience.

If your proposed article idea makes sense to a targeted editor, she will respond favorably with only two substantive points: desired deadline and word count. After that, it's your ballgame: draft your article, edit or revise it once or twice, add your byline at the top and bio at the bottom, and submit on time. This process, likely, will result in acceptance of your article.

Your initial idea is what gets you there.
