thoughts you should know...
...nothing less

Next time you’re feeling bitter, resentful, envious or angry, consider these words from Nelson Mandela in his inauguration speech as the new President of South Africa in 1994. His sentiments followed 27 years of incarceration by a government that had been determined to keep its foot not only on him but on his entire race:

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

“We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?'

“Actually, who are you NOT to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.

“There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. And it's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.

“As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Mandela had every right to be bitter, resentful and violently angry at the world. Yet he chose instead to inspire us to greatness.

Dare to be great, nothing less.

For further insights from the life and mind of Nelson Mandela, see Chapter One of The Arch and the Path: The Life of Leading Greatly by Michael Shenkman, President of the Arch of Leadership, a leader mentoring firm based in Albuquerque and Boston. thoughtleader university...
...Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Thoughtleaders have been with us through the ages, so it occurred to us we should spotlight from time to time thoughtleaders from days gone by. Here’s the first one, posted on our website, Elizabeth Cady Stanton: http://www.thoughtleading.com/tlspeak/tlprof_jun06.htm

What can each of us do to bring forth an “environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling and socially just human presence” on this planet? Thoughtleaders Miriam Hawley and Jeffrey McIntyre, members of the Pachamama Alliance, hope you’ll join them at a special luncheon aimed at exploring this question, on Tuesday June 13 at noon at the Westin Copley Place Hotel in Boston.
